Train Not to Move

In almost all sports, even though you are constantly in motion, there are also times where avoiding movement is essential. Maybe you are trying to brace against an opponent or simply resisting over rotating in a swing. These and other instances demand a strong core that cannot lose tension easily.

Even in your training you want to have a strong midline that can keep from crumbling under pressure. If you have ever seen someone perform a max weight squat clean you have also likely seen athletes’ chests fall forward and back round as they catch the weight. This is because they lack the core strength to keep their back from moving.

In order to be strong in all of your movements you also need to be able to resist movement. So instead of simply adding in more sit-ups to your program try exercises that force you to maintain a rigid core. Below are a few great variations for building an unyielding foundation.
