The Sound of Nature

One of the easiest ways to immerse yourself in nature is through sound. Everyone inherently knows the peaceful feeling of being outside and hearing rain dropping on leaves or a burning campfire. Multiple studies have shown the effect these types of sounds have on the stress levels and recovery of those listening.

Many medical atmospheres incorporate nature sounds to calm patients going through procedures. Schools and other environments may use it to increase focus for those listening as well.

One of the clearest ways nature sounds help is by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. This means that it help us to relax. (kind of obvious?) In fact, when tested against other man made noises nature soundtracks win out having the most dramatic affect on participants to lower stress levels.

While you work today or when you just need to bring your stress levels down from 11 in order to focus on school, work, or sports try incorporating some nature sounds. They are easy enough to find on youtube or on one of my personal favorite apps, Portal. This app has many different super immersive soundscapes to help you focus or meditate. With headphones in you will feel like you are in the middle of the outdoor scene you choose. Personal favorites are the Redwood National Park and Ama Dablam!
